June 28: Armour/Armure at the Canadian War Museum

We are inviting ALL urban sketchers in Ottawa to join us on June 28, 2018 between 5 and 8 pm for this FREE evening of sketching at Canada's War Museum.

Armour / Armure

An exhibition developed by Contemporanea Progetti in collaboration with the Museo Stibbert (Florence, Italy) about "Armour" recently opened at the Canadian War Museum on June 15, 2018.

Armour is a fascinating display of protective gear used by knights, soldiers, athletes and actors through time.

Have you ever seen a “Parade Corselet” or a “youth’s suit of armour” from the late 1500s? Would you like to sketch the “bullet farmer” costume from Mad Max: Fury Road (on loan from Warner Brothers)? Read more from Ottawa's Peter Simpson at Artfile

Read this great article at Canadian Geographic by Katherine Lissitsa https://www.canadiangeographic.ca/article/exhibition-traces-evolution-armour-renaissance-hollywood

Please join us on this FREE night   June 28, 2018 (5- 8 pm) at the museum. You can sketch everything from garments worn by samurai warriors to hockey goalie equipment to a replica of Iron Man’s costume.

If you are not interested in "Armour", there are plenty of other things to sketch at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Reasons to Sketch the Canadian War Museum on November 11

On Saturday Nov. 11, the Ottawa Urban Sketchers will be at the Canadian War Museum
The last time that the Ottawa Urban sketchers have sketched at the Canadian War Museum  was November 21st, 2015 and you can read about it here: https://ottawaurbansketchers.blogspot.ca/2015/11/sketching-indoors-at-canadian-war-museum.html.

We now have three good reasons to return on November 11th, 2017:

Reason #1: It's Remembrance Day!

The official national Remembrance Day ceremonies are held in OTTAWA at the National War Memorial !
Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion organizes the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa. Highlights include the veterans themselves on parade, the attendance of the Prime Minister, the Governor General of Canada, and the Silver Cross Mother – a woman whose child has died while serving in the military. There is also a wreath-laying ceremony and an RCAF fly-past (weather permitting).

The Canadian War Museum offers Ottawa urban sketchers an opportunity to participate in this day of remembrance in an indoor location.

Reason #2: Its Urban Sketchers 10th Birthday!

On Saturday 11th November 2017, Urban Sketchers (USk) chapters from around the globe will hold sketchwalks in their cities to celebrate 10 years of Urban Sketchers.

http://www.urbansketchers.org/p/10-year-anniversary-celebration.html
On November 11, 2007 Gabi Campanario pushed the button to create an online group called Urban Sketchers. This small group of like-minded artists, sharing their work on Flickr, has grown in ten years:
Using GMT time, we will follow the sketchwalks on the USk Instagram account starting with the first chapter to see daylight (Auckland, New Zealand) to the last chapter to see the sunset (O’ahu, USA).  Look for hashtag #USkGlobal24hrSketchwalk on social media!

If you’d like to hear more about the founding and early history of Urban Sketchers, check out this video of Gabi Campanario’s keynote address at the 8th Urban Sketchers Symposium in Chicago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cfdnC-vsIQ

Reason #3: It the 57th World Wide Sketch Crawl!

Ottawa Urban sketchers have been participating in World Wide SketchCrawls for many, many years now and November 11th will be the #57 and that's the last good reason to sketch the Canadian War Museum on Nov. 11!

Official Remembrance Day Ceremonies

The Canadian War Museum has scheduled very specific events throughout the day on November 11 and you can learn more by visiting http://www.warmuseum.ca/remember/

Our sketching event will commence after the official Remembrance Day ceremonies that are being broadcasted live starting at 10:00 am. including a moment of silence at the eleventh hour and ending at noon.

On Remembrance Day, at exactly 11 a.m., sunlight shines through a single window in Memorial Hall at the Canadian War Museum to frame the headstone representing Canada’s Unknown Soldier. A limited number of free tickets are be available as of 9:30 a.m. at the Information Desk. No reservations are permitted. This moving event will also be broadcast within the Museum and streamed live at warmuseum.ca/remember and facebook.com/warmuseum.

Sketching the War Museum

Besides the many Remembrance Day scheduled activities and the many uniformed and civilian visitors that will be on site, there is also a vast art collection (numbering some 13,000 pieces) and extensive artifact collections arranged in eight permanent collections including four Canadian Experience galleries as well as the LeBreton gallery.  There is a LOT to sketch!
