December: Sketching the Ottawa Art Gallery

Thank you to everyone who came out to sketch the Ottawa Art Gallery on December 1st, 2018.

For many of our Ottawa urban sketchers, this was their very first time visiting the recently renovated Ottawa Art Gallery and everyone was very impressed and plans to visit again!

It was our last sketch event for 2018 and there were plenty of familiar faces and some new faces too! It is always so great when have new people come out to our events.

The Ottawa Art Gallery provides stools conveniently located in all of the galleries and our sketchers made good use of them!

What an amazing space to visit and explore and what a great place to sketch!

There was no wet media allowed in the galleries and many sketchers wished they had been able to use their watercolours to capture the incredible colours in the Karim Rashid exhibit!

Some of our sketchers applied colour to their sketches after leaving the gallery.

Sketch by artist Mike Carr who said that "Karim Rashid design exhibit was awesome."

The new art gallery has plenty of airy spaces and beautiful natural light and presents many interesting sketching challenges for those who were willing to take on unusual perspectives.

Even the staff at the Ottawa Art Gallery graciously obliged us by being the subject of our sketches

Some sketchers chose to sketch at the "Jackson" coffee shop and lounge on the main floor.

And we always love when our sketchers do sketches of their fellow sketchers!

I managed to squeeze in a quick sketch (15-20 minutes) of Michèle Provost’s exhibit “Everything Must Go” Michèle is a Gatineau-based artist and this exhibit examines the place of art and artists within a market-driven society (wished I could have used my watercolours) the tick-tock of the clocks was hypnotic!

Thanks again to all the sketchers who came out to the Ottawa Art Gallery. Many said they would love to sketch there again!

And the Ottawa urban sketchers extend their sincere gratitude to ALL of the great folks at the Ottawa Art Gallery who helped us starting with our planning of the event. All of the staff working there who were incredibly helpful and made us all feel very welcomed.
