Ottawa Urban Sketchers Visit the National Gallery of Canada

The last gathering of the Ottawa urban sketchers for 2015 took place at the National Gallery of Canada and everyone is looking forward to more sketching meetups in 2016!

The National Gallery of Canada

A great group of sketchers showed up for a wonderful evening at the National Gallery of Canada. There were some familiar faces and some new faces as well. We love that!

New sketchers are always welcome!

Part of the Ottawa urban sketcher group posing under the Christmas tree

There were many fun challenges on this sketchcrawl:
  • There was a museum rule of "pencils only" and "no erasers"!
  • The time frame was short (5 to 8 pm) and there were so many galleries to choose from!
  • The exhibit: Monet: Bridge to Modernity" drew large crowds.
  • The busy holiday season meant that many of the Ottawa urban sketchers that wished to attend had to send their regrets instead.
At the end of the evening, everyone shared their sketches and it was clear that everyone enjoyed themselves overcoming the challenges and creating some great sketches

Our sketches from the show and tell.

Documentary: Forgotten Spaces by Justin Nalepa

This is an 8-minute video by filmmaker Justin Nalepa
of Ottawa urban sketchers who spent last summer
urban sketching Ottawa's "Forgotten Spaces"

Filmmaker Justin Nalepa says, "I'm very proud to share with you my latest documentary, Forgotten Spaces. A huge thanks goes out to Colin White for all his help in bringing together an amazing group of people and leading us on a journey around Ottawa's alleyways.
"Alleyways in Ottawa are forgotten spaces. They serve as loading zones, garbage pickup and areas for bar staff to smoke. More interestingly, they serve as rudimentary pedestrian zones. People use them to get off main streets or create shortcuts. There is a strange beauty in the aesthetic: because they are not being officially presented to the public, they are often decayed and decrepit. Alleys display the hidden operational needs of a city: dumpsters, scary bundles of hydro wires, venting and piping, grim and grease traps." - Colin White

Featuring the remarkable works of Emma Cochrane, Marc Adornato, Mawt Trood, Kristina Corre, Cindi Foreman, Anthony Parravano, Colin White, Stephen Frew, Beccy Murphy and Chris Roussakis.

What is Digi60?

The Digi60 Filmmakers’ Festival is a grassroots, local “catch” film festival where filmmakers have 60 days to create and complete a seven-minute short film. These films are evaluated by a jury of industry professionals from across North America. The films are screened at a public gala event, taking place this year at the Centrepointe Studio Theatre.

Digi60’s long time mandate has two important components: to provide opportunities for new and emerging filmmakers to create and screen their work while networking with other filmmakers, and to build a professional skill base for the participants of the Festival to enter the filmmaking industry.

You See More When You Draw

rijksmuseum.nl

Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, which was recently renovated and restored by Cruz y Ortiz, have launched The Big Draw campaign, encouraging visitors to ditch the camera and pick up a pad and pencil.
Under the tagline 'You See More When You Draw', the Dutch national museum want to "help visitors discover and appreciate the beauty of art, architecture and history through drawing" as a counter to what they describe as an often "passive and superficial experience" when seen through the lens of a smartphone.

In response to the initiative, Wim Pijbes, General Director of the Rijksmuseum, has said:

"In our busy lives we don’t always realise
how beautiful something can be.
We forget how to look really closely.
Drawing helps because you see more when you draw."

Sketching Indoors at the Canadian War Museum

It was a great evening of indoor sketching on Thursday, November 19th.

Ottawa urban sketchers are meeting indoors to sketch for the months of November and December and Thursday was our first time taking advantage of free Ottawa museum Thursdays.

We met in the grand lobby of the Canadian War Museum and dispersed into the many areas of this great museum.

Inside the museum, there was a vast art collection (numbering some 13,000 pieces) and extensive artifact collections arranged in eight permanent collections including four Canadian Experience galleries as well as the LeBreton gallery.  There was plenty to sketch!

Part of the Ottawa sketching group at the end-of-evening "Show and Tell"

The challenge with sketching in museums such as the Canadian War Museum is that the exhibits are so incredibly interesting (and interactive) that you're tempted to look, read and participate in the exhibit rather than sketch. At least that was the case for a small group of us who enjoyed the temporary special exhibit "World War Women"

Despite these delightful temptations, everyone managed to complete several sketches and seemed to really enjoy the evening.

Here are some images from our night of sketching:

Suvitha Ramaswamy sketching in the LeBreton Gallery where part of our group started.
"The LeBreton Gallery is an expansive space with lots of natural light, and a stunning view of the Ottawa skyline. This impressive open storage gallery enables visitors to get a close-up look at large artefacts such as a Voodoo fighter jet, nineteenth-century artillery pieces, tanks, and other vehicles drawn from one of the most extensive collections of its kind in the world."

Our "sketch crawls" are free and open to sketchers of all ages and levels. Anyone who sketches in Ottawa is welcomed to join us!

The next confirmed sketch crawl will be Thursday evening December 17 at the National Gallery of Canada. (see restrictions on materials allowed in the "details" section)

Report: Sketching Mellos

The weather was great for sketching Mellos yesterday. A few sketchers were on Dalhousie right at 2 pm and others showed up at various times all the way through to the last session 6-8pm where the sketching took place inside Mellos. (If you have an urban sketch of Mellos that you would like to have on this page, contact us through the contact section on the right.)

Workers at Mellos really appreciated the love.

Here are some tweets from yesterday and a photo of that iconic Mellos sign when I left:

Sketching Mellos Today!

Mellos Restaurant, 290 Dalhousie St, Ottawa

With the developments surrounding Mello’s diner the past few days, artist Colin White has organized some Ottawa urban sketchers to get out on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 for a day of sketching this iconic market diner..

Mellos 73 year history in the ByWard market appears to be coming to an end.  Mellos has been in the same location at 290 Dalhousie street since 1942 and is being kicked out after their landlord offered the space to neighbouring restaurant Ace Mercado.

Join Us Today for Some Sketching

Any Ottawa urban sketchers wishing to join other urban sketchers for the "Mellos sketchcrawl" on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 are welcome to bring their sketchpads downtown anytime between 2 to 8 pm.

The plan is:

A Great Day in Ottawa's ByWard Market

It was a cool, crisp morning so the group decided to sketch the courtyards first starting with the Beaux-Arts Court where the cast iron angel  is located.

Sketch by Cindi Moynahan-Foreman of cast iron angel in the Beaux-Arts Court

It was quite sunny when we arrived and folks managed to do a few quick sketches before it started to get a little windy.

We decided to warm ourselves up and sketch inside while having scones, tea and coffee at the Planet Coffee in the Clarendon courtyard.

The first "Official SketchCrawl" photo of the day at Planet Coffee
The market was filled with beautiful fall colours and the vendors created wonderful displays. Everywhere there were beautiful, bright orange pumpkins! There were lots of shoppers and buskers. There was so much to sketch it was hard to choose.

Everyone met for lunch at noon (at the Byward Market Moulin De Provence Bakery ) and some more sketchers joined us there for the afternoon.

After lunch, Ottawa artist Laurie Foster sat inside the Tea Shop and sketched this beautiful sketch of the ByWard Market's Moulin De Provence bakery which was across the street:

The second level of the Byward Market building provided an extra challenge for sketchers. This angle from upstairs was challenging and the whimsical, papier mâché cloud called, "McClintock’s Dream" added interest and fun!

A few sketchers decided to sketch York St. from the second level of the parking building. It was a perfect vantage point and sheltered from the wind!

The temperature fluctuated throughout the day with great, grey rain clouds coming and going, but the rain held off for us thankfully!

It was a great group of folks who seem keen to meet again and do more sketching so stay tuned for the next Ottawa sketchcrawl.
