JAN 21 An Evening of Sketching at the Canadian Museum of Nature

Join us on Thursday evening January 21, 2016 for an indoor evening sketch meetup at the Canadian Museum of Nature. The Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) was the first purpose built museum in Canada! CMN is home to 10 million specimens gathered over 150 years.



To keep our sketch meetups free, we will be sketching at the museum Thursday January 21, 2016 in the evening between 5 and 8 pm.

NOTE: Some CMN galleries require an admission fee (see details below) but, if you want to see them for free, you can check out the OPL "Borrow A Pass" program (if you have an Ottawa library card)

Architecture

If the weather permits, there is plenty to sketch on the exterior of this magnificent CMN building.

The impressive limestone building (built in 1905, and beautifully renovated in 2010) is known to locals as “the castle.” Canada's Parliament was held in this building from 1916 to 1920 after the Ottawa fire of 1916.

The original building – known as the Victoria Memorial Museum Building (VMMB) - has been described as Scottish Baronial in design.

"The museum is one of the first public buildings to incorporate into its design animals and plants that are found in Canada. These are found in windows, exterior walls and interior embellishments, in addition to the two carved moose heads that guard the main entrance." (Source: CMN)

The architecture inside the CNM building is stunning and would be very interesting to sketch.

The Galleries

Two of the galleries (Birds and Animalium) are presently closed for renovations until June 2016 and two other galleries are special exhibits and require admission purchase even on the free Thursday night. 

There is a lot to sketch in three hours at the following open galleries:

• When: Thursday, January21, 2016. Free Admission to the Permanent Galleries Thursday evenings: 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. We will meet in the main lobby at 5 pm and sketch until 8 pm; (If work schedules prevent you from arriving at 5 - no worries - arrive whenever you can and look for other sketchers)

• Parking: Paid parking is available on the Canadian Museum of Nature grounds; evening flat rate: $5 (4:30 pm – 4:30 am); there is free evening street parking at night in centretown but there are special restrictions if there is snow.
  
• Museum Rules: When asked about sketchers in the nature museum, the officer of Visitor Experience Guy Romain advises, "Thank you for your question.  The only thing we ask of artists is that they do not set up easels or tripods or lighting.  They need to be mindful that the museum is open to all visitors so they cannot block any exhibits, panels, doorways or stairways. Please let me know if you have any further questions or comments." We asked  a follow-up question about artists bringing portable, small sketch stools and the museum replied (Jan 14) that artists are welcome to bring small stools.

Ottawa Urban Sketchers Visit the National Gallery of Canada

The last gathering of the Ottawa urban sketchers for 2015 took place at the National Gallery of Canada and everyone is looking forward to more sketching meetups in 2016!

A great group of sketchers showed up for a wonderful evening at the National Gallery of Canada. There were some familiar faces and some new faces as well. We love that!

There were many fun challenges on this sketchcrawl:

• There was a museum rule of "pencils only" and "no erasers"! 
• The time frame was short (5 to 8 pm) and there were so many galleries to choose from!
• The exhibit: Monet: Bridge to Modernity" drew large crowds.
• The busy holiday season meant that many of the Ottawa urban sketchers that wished to attend had to send their regrets instead.

At the end of the evening, everyone shared their sketches and it was clear that everyone enjoyed themselves overcoming the challenges and creating some great sketches

"Alleyways in Ottawa are forgotten spaces. They serve as loading zones, garbage pickup and areas for bar staff to smoke. More interestingly, they serve as rudimentary pedestrian zones. People use them to get off main streets or create shortcuts. There is a strange beauty in the aesthetic: because they are not being officially presented to the public, they are often decayed and decrepit. Reminder: Two Great Sketching Events This Week

There are two great evening sketching events this week: life drawing on Tuesday at the Atomic Rooster on Bank St (the theme is Star Wars) and museum sketching on Thursday at the National Gallery of Canada.

Both events are free and both events welcome sketchers of all levels. All you need is a pencil and something to sketch on so please join us!

The documentary "Forgotten Spaces" by filmmaker Justin Nalepa will be screening at the Digi60 Filmmakers' Festival this Friday!

Forgotten Spaces follows a group of talented artists as they explore alleyways around Ottawa. Featuring artists Colin White, Emma Cochrane, Anthony Parravano, Marc Adornato, Cindi Foreman, Mawt Trood, Stephen Frew and Kristina Corre.

What is Digi60? 

The Digi60 Filmmakers’ Festival is a grassroots, local “catch” film festival where filmmakers have 60 days to create and complete a seven-minute short film. These films are evaluated by a jury of industry professionals from across North America. The films are screened at a public gala event, taking place this year at the Centrepointe Studio Theatre.

Digi60’s long time mandate has two important components: to provide opportunities for new and emerging filmmakers to create and screen their work while networking with other filmmakers, and to build a professional skill base for the participants of the Festival to enter the filmmaking industry.

You See More When You Draw

Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, which was recently renovated and restored by Cruz y Ortiz, have launched The Big Draw campaign, encouraging visitors to ditch the camera and pick up a pad and pencil. 

Under the tagline 'You See More When You Draw', the Dutch national museum want to "help visitors discover and appreciate the beauty of art, architecture and history through drawing" as a counter to what they describe as an often "passive and superficial experience" when seen through the lens of a smartphone.

Sketching Indoors at the Canadian War Museum

It was a great evening of indoor sketching on Thursday, November 19th.

Ottawa urban sketchers are meeting indoors to sketch for the months of November and December and Thursday was our first time taking advantage of free Ottawa museum Thursdays.

We met in the grand lobby of the Canadian War Museum and dispersed into the many areas of this great museum.

Inside the museum, there was a vast art collection (numbering some 13,000 pieces) and extensive artifact collections arranged in eight permanent collections including four Canadian Experience galleries as well as the LeBreton gallery.  There was plenty to sketch!

The challenge with sketching in museums such as the Canadian War Museum is that the exhibits are so incredibly interesting (and interactive) that you're tempted to look, read and participate in the exhibit rather than sketch. At least that was the case for a small group of us who enjoyed the temporary special exhibit "World War Women"

Despite these delightful temptations, everyone managed to complete several sketches and seemed to really enjoy the evening.

Thursday, December 17 - An Indoor Evening Sketchcrawl!

The National Gallery of Canada

Various artworks from the Canadian collections of the National Gallery of Canada will be packed up temporarily in the new year in preparation for Canada's 150th birthday celebration in 2017. So what better time to go to the gallery and sketch your favourite pieces than now?

The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) (French: Musée des beaux-arts du Canada), is one of Canada's premier art galleries.

The Gallery is housed in a glass and granite building on Sussex Drive with a notable view of the Canadian Parliament buildings on Parliament Hill. 

The building was designed by Moshe Safdie and opened in 1988.The Gallery's former director Jean Sutherland Boggs was chosen especially by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to oversee construction of the national gallery and museums.


There are 36,000 works of art from the 14th to 21st centuries and even a 19th-century chapel (saved from demolition in 1972, it was dismantled into 1,000 pieces, stored and reconstructed within the Gallery)!

The galleries are divided into six separate areas: the Canadian collection, the European, American, and Asian galleries, the Inuit galleries, a section for contemporary art (including video), another for prints, drawings, and photographs, and a separate space for temporary exhibitions.

Report: Sketching Mellos

The weather was great for sketching Mellos yesterday. A few sketchers were on Dalhousie right at 2 pm and others showed up at various times all the way through to the last session 6-8pm where the sketching took place inside Mellos. With the developments surrounding Mello’s diner the past few days, artist Colin White has organized some Ottawa urban sketchers to get out on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 for a day of sketching this iconic market diner..

Mellos 73 year history in the ByWard market appears to be coming to an end.  Mellos has been in the same location at 290 Dalhousie street since 1942 and is being kicked out after their landlord offered the space to neighbouring restaurant Ace Mercado.

Join Us Today for Some Sketching

Any Ottawa urban sketchers wishing to join other urban sketchers for the "Mellos sketchcrawl" on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 are welcome to bring their sketchpads downtown anytime between 2 to 8 pm.

The plan is:

• 2 - 4 pm: meet to sketch Mellos outside in sun (weather forecasted to be 15°C)
• 4 - 6 pm warm up across the road in “Atari” - to sketch from across the road 
• 6 - 8pm -Food & Drink inside Mellos - sketch interior
