May 2017 Urban Sketching Events

The record rainfall in Ottawa so far this year has been made it very challenging to schedule outdoor urban sketching events !

We are cautiously optimistic (fingers crossed) that these three events that we have now scheduled in May will take place on sunny, warm days!

May 13 - Central Experimental Farm

Some sketches and photos from our 2016 Day At The Farm
We are heading back to the farm again this year for another day of sketching. (Read about our super-successful 2016 "Day at the Farm" here: https://ottawaurbansketchers.blogspot.ca/2016/04/what-great-day-at-farm.html)

With thanks to the great management at the Central Experimental Farm, for May 13 "any visitors who identify themselves as part of the Ottawa Urban Sketchers group will have free admission to the museum on that date, as approved by Management."

In exchange for free admission, the Experimental Farm would like us to share our sketches with them on social media.

  • When: Rain or Shine! Saturday May 13, 2017 from 11 am to 3 pm. Actually, arrive whenever you like and stay for one hour or until closing. The unpredictable spring weather in Ottawa being what it is, there are many indoor sketching spaces and barns on the farm (and a tiny tropical greenhouse that is free) in the event that we get more rain. We will update sketchers through our facebook page as the day approaches and we know the weather forecast.
  • Show and Tell: Meet inside the Learning Center at 3pm if you wish to share your sketches or to see other sketchers' work and take a group photo (voluntary)
  • How to get there: The museum is located at (901) Prince of Wales Drive (parking lot location). The Museum is accessible by public transit, and there is plenty of parking for both bikes and cars.
  • Driving: enter GPS location 45.386933, -75.706867 for directions. Note: Parking fees are now charged.($6 maximum for the day) http://cafmuseum.techno-science.ca/en/visit/parking.php
  • Public Transportation: For OC Transpo routes and times, use the Trip Planner link: http://www.octranspo1.com/ottawa-destinations/central_experimental_farm
  • Biking: enter GPS location 45.386933, -75.706867 for directions
  • Museum Rules: Cameras are permitted at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum. However, please remember that this is a working farm, exposed to the elements and sometimes harsh conditions. Also, please be respectful of the animals. Getting too close or being too aggressive in your attempt to get a picture could cause them stress. Small collapsible stools are permitted as long as they do not interfere with the other visitors.
  • Protect yourself and the animals by practising biosecurity. Biosecurity is the word we use for simple, inexpensive steps that prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. Learn about biosecurity and the precautions you can take to protect yourself and the Museum’s animals. Download this PDF from the Canada Food Inspection Agency prior to your visit.

May 27 Great Glebe Garage Sale

The Great Glebe Garage Sale on Google Image Search

We are trying something new this year! A "shop-n-sketch" at the Great Glebe Garage Sale (GGGS) https://glebeca.ca/garage-sale-committee/

This GGGS event has been organized by the Glebe Community Association since 1986 and vendors (and shoppers) are encouraged to voluntarily donate some of their proceeds to the Ottawa Food Bank

This event is so crowded and busy that a sketcher can easily park themselves anywhere and sketch the great houses, the vendor tables and/or the people attending this one day sale.

A little know fact is that, during this sale, residents are encouraged to install a simple plaque telling visitors a little history about their house and something about its architectural style! http://glebeca.ca/heritage-at-gggs-2017/

Look for signs like the one below!! A great opportunity to speak with the home owners and sketch some local history!

There are a LOT of streets involved in this one-day event
